Urban Labs Innovation Challenge: Chicago 2015

The Urban Labs Innovation Challenge aims to generate evidence on what urban policy interventions work, for whom, and why.

First, policymakers and practitioners propose promising solutions to urban challenges. Then a team of Urban Labs staff and experts from relevant sectors consider the ideas and select one or more to support, working together with local agencies and philanthropists to secure funding. Innovation Challenge grantees collaborate with Urban Labs on the design, implementation, evaluation, refinement and, ideally, scale-up of their programs.

Urban Labs committed a total of more than $2 million in grants in 2015 to three organizations for the development, implementation, and rigorous evaluation of promising interventions designed address major health, economic opportunity, and energy and environment related challenges. Grantees' interventions are in the process of being evaluated using rigorous scientific methods, including randomized controlled trials. The evidence generated from these evaluations will be widely disseminated and help to inform approaches to large-scale policy development in Chicago and beyond.
