Dr. Marilyn Sinkewicz is the Research Director of the Health Lab. Previously, she was the Director of Research and Evaluation for Children, Youth and Families at the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. She also conducted research on mental health and the criminal legal system with the Vera Institute of Justice. She is a faculty associate at the University of Michigan Institute for Social Research, and consults with local governments and communities about health equity and community development. She received a Ph.D. from Columbia University, and completed post-doctoral studies in the Robert Wood Johnson Health and Society Scholars Program as well as the National Institute of Mental Health Psychiatric Epidemiology Training Program.
Dr. Sinkewicz’s academic research concerns the social and economic causes and consequences of health inequities. Her studies have been published in Demography, the Journal of Policy Analysis and Management, Psychiatric Services, the Journal of African American Studies, and other publications. Her work has been covered in the press, including the New York Times, The Nation, and the Louisiana Weekly, the oldest African American newspaper in the US.
