Poverty Lab Direct Giving Lab

Research suggests that costs associated with the college application process (e.g. standardized test fees, college application fees, and college visits) can be barriers for low-income students to apply to or enroll in college. The Poverty Lab is currently recruiting one or more nonprofit organizations to partner on a study that will explore whether providing a small, well-timed cash transfer of $1000 to low-income families has a measurable impact on a student’s likelihood of pursuing a postsecondary education. Our goal is to identify organizations that work with low-income high school seniors interested in applying to college, and to conduct a randomized controlled trial with a minimum of 400 students. This project will be conducted in partner with the Direct Giving Lab, a non-profit dedicated to increasing the use of unconditional cash transfers as a form of philanthropy.
