Crime Lab Springfield is complicit, too, in Chicago's rising crime rate

Gun violence in Chicago is drawing attention across the nation and even around the globe. Our homicide rate rose by 58 percent from 2015 to 2016. Such a large increase in just one year for a big American city is unheard of. And more than halfway into 2017, there are few signs that things are getting better.

In response, many are asking: Why is Chicago so different from New York and Los Angeles? Both had similar levels of gun violence in the early 1990s but are much safer today; looking to such cities has been a useful way to identify "best practices" to adopt in Chicago.
